Why Summer Is One of My Favorite Times for Family Photos in Minnesota

Every season has something special to offer, but there is just something about a Minnesota summer that feels carefree. The kids are out of school, the evenings are long, and families have a little more room to slow down and simply enjoy being together.

As a family photographer in Plymouth, Minnesota, here are a few reasons I love photographing families during the summer months.

Everything Is Green

One of the first things I notice each summer is how vibrant everything becomes.

The trees are full, the grass is lush, and parks are bursting with beautiful shades of green. Combined with warm evening sunlight, it creates a timeless backdrop that lets your family be the focus.

Summer has a fresh, natural look that photographs beautifully year after year.

The Light Is Hard to Beat

Minnesota summer evenings are filled with gorgeous golden light.

That soft summer glow adds warmth to your images and creates the kind of light photographers dream about. It helps create photos that feel bright, joyful, and full of life.

Whether we're walking through a park, playing in a field, or spending time in your own backyard, summer light has a way of making ordinary moments feel a little magical.

There's Less Stress

One of my favorite things about summer sessions has nothing to do with the weather.

Families simply seem more relaxed.

Without homework, busy school mornings, and packed activity schedules, kids often come to sessions with more energy to play and explore. Parents can take a deep breath instead of rushing from one commitment to the next.

That relaxed feeling naturally shows up in your photos.

Summer Sessions Can Be Simple

Family photos do not have to be a big production.

Some families choose a favorite local park, while others love the idea of documenting this season of life in their own backyard. Backyard sessions can be especially meaningful because they capture the place where so many everyday memories are made.

If your schedule is full, even a short mini session can be the perfect way to update your family photos before fall sports, school events, and busy calendars take over.

Sometimes simple really is best.

It's a Chance to Slow Down Together

One of the things I love most about family photography is that it gives you permission to pause.

For one evening, your only job is to spend time together.

We'll walk, laugh, play, snuggle, and capture a mix of classic family portraits and genuine moments that reflect your family right now.

Years from now, I hope your photos remind you not only of what everyone looked like, but also what summer felt like.

Thinking About Family Photos This Summer?

If you've been meaning to update your family photos, summer is a wonderful time to do it.

Whether you envision a playful evening at a local park, a relaxed backyard session, or a quick mini session before the school year begins, I'd love to help you capture this season of your family's story.

I photograph families in Plymouth, Wayzata, Minnetonka, and surrounding Minnesota communities with a relaxed approach that focuses on both genuine connection and timeless family portraits.
