Fall Is Popular for Family Photos, But It’s Not the Only Good Time
If you live in Minnesota, you probably already know that fall is a very popular time for family photos.
And honestly, I get it.
The colorful leaves, cooler temperatures, cozy layers, and beautiful evening light make September and October such a pretty time of year for family sessions. There’s a reason fall fills up quickly on photographers’ calendars.
But after photographing families in Minnesota for years, I also think it’s easy to get caught up in the idea that fall is the only time you should have family photos taken.
It really isn’t.
Every season has something different to offer, and sometimes another time of year may actually work better for your family.

Summer Family Photos Feel Playful and Relaxed
Summer is one of my favorite times for family photos.
Everything is green and full, the days are long, and there is often a little more flexibility in the family schedule. Kids are out of school, which can make it easier to plan a session without worrying about homework, school activities, and the million things that seem to fill the calendar once September arrives.
Summer sessions also have a very different feel than fall.
There are barefoot kids, long grass, warm evenings, and plenty of room for movement and play. If your family loves a more relaxed, outdoorsy feel, summer can be a wonderful choice.
Spring Brings Something Completely Different
Spring in Minnesota can be unpredictable, but when everything starts turning green again, it is beautiful.
Fresh grass, budding trees, flowers, and softer colors create a completely different backdrop from the warm tones of fall.
Spring can also be a nice option for families who don't want to wait until fall for updated photos. You may have more flexibility with dates and locations, and there is something really sweet about photographing your family as everything around you is starting fresh again.

Winter Doesn't Have to Mean No Family Photos
I know.
Minnesota winter.
It isn't exactly the first season that comes to mind when you think about family photos.
But winter can actually create some really beautiful images. Fresh snow, bare trees, cozy layers, and soft winter light can give your photos a look that is completely different from the rest of the year.
And if standing outside in freezing temperatures isn't your idea of a good time, there are other options, too.
An in-home session can be especially meaningful during the winter months. Instead of worrying about the weather, we can stay home and photograph your family in the spaces where your everyday life actually happens.
So, When Is the Best Time for Family Photos?
Honestly?
The best time is the season that works for your family.
If you've always dreamed of colorful fall photos, absolutely go for it. Fall is popular for a reason, and there is nothing wrong with loving those beautiful Minnesota colors.
But if fall doesn't work with your schedule, don't feel like you missed your chance.
Maybe summer fits your family better.
Maybe you'd love the fresh greens and flowers of spring.
Maybe winter feels like a fun change from the photos you've had in the past.
Or maybe you simply have a new baby, a growing family, or kids who are changing so quickly that waiting another six months doesn't make sense.
There is no rule that says your family photos have to happen in October.
Sometimes the most meaningful photos are the ones you take simply because this is what your family looks like right now.
And that is worth documenting in every season.
