What to Expect During an In-Home Newborn Photography Session

Bringing home a new baby is such a special time, but it can also feel a little overwhelming. Between feeding, recovering, and figuring out life with a newborn, the idea of scheduling photos might feel like one more thing on your list.

The good news? An in-home newborn photography session can be simple, relaxed, and flexible. You don't need a perfectly organized house, a baby who sleeps the entire time, or any experience in front of the camera.

As a newborn photographer in Plymouth, Minnesota, I want families to feel comfortable knowing what to expect before I arrive. Here's a little look at how an in-home newborn session works and how you can

prepare without adding extra stress to those early weeks.

1. We Keep Things Simple

One of the best parts of an in-home newborn session is that you don't have to pack up your baby and head somewhere else. I'll come to you, so everything you need is already close by.

There's no need to plan your day around a long drive or worry about forgetting something important. If your baby needs a feeding, a diaper change, or a little extra comfort, we're right where we need to be.

My goal is to make the experience feel easy and enjoyable, not like another appointment you have to get through.

2. Your Home Doesn't Need to Be Perfect

This is probably one of the biggest concerns I hear from parents.

Please don't feel like you need to deep-clean your entire house before your session! We typically only need a few areas with nice natural light, such as the nursery, your bedroom, or a comfortable spot in the living room.

I'll help you find the best spaces and angles as we go. Moving a few things out of the way is sometimes all it takes.

Your home doesn't need to look like a magazine. It's the place where you're getting to know your baby, and that's what makes these photos personal.

3. What Should Your Baby Wear?

For lifestyle newborn photos, I love simple clothing that keeps the focus on your baby and your family.

A neutral-colored onesie, a soft sleeper, or a simple swaddle can all work beautifully. You don't need a collection of special outfits or elaborate accessories.

If you're unsure what to choose, don't worry. We can keep things simple and work with what you already have.

The same goes for parents and siblings. Comfortable clothing in soft, coordinating colors is a great place to start. You don't all need to match perfectly.

4. What Happens During the Session?

Every family is different, so no two sessions look exactly alike.

We'll spend time photographing your baby on their own, along with the little details you might want to remember, like tiny fingers, eyelashes, and the way they fit in your arms.

We'll also capture your family together. That might mean snuggling on your bed, holding your baby near a window, sitting together on the couch, or simply enjoying a quiet moment.

I'll offer gentle direction so you know where to sit, how to hold your baby, and where to look. You don't need to know how to pose or worry about what to do with your hands.

We'll aim for those classic family portraits, too, along with the natural moments that happen in between.

5. What If Your Baby Cries or Needs to Eat?

That's completely normal!

Newborns don't follow a photography schedule, and I don't expect them to. If your baby needs to eat, be changed, or have a little time to settle, we'll take a break.

Your baby doesn't have to sleep the entire time, either. Awake newborn photos can be just as sweet, and some of those curious little expressions are favorites.

There's no pressure for everything to go perfectly. We'll follow your baby's lead and work with the day we have.

6. What About Older Siblings?

If you have older children, you might be wondering how they'll do with a new baby and a camera in the mix.

I'll help guide them into the photos without expecting them to sit perfectly still for the entire session. We can capture them holding the baby with your help, giving a gentle kiss, or simply spending time together as a family.

It's okay if they need a break or lose interest after a few minutes. We'll work with their personalities and make room for those genuine interactions.

The goal isn't to make everyone perform. It's to capture your family as you are during this new season.

7. How Long Does a Newborn Session Take?

My in-home newborn sessions typically last around 40 to 50 minutes. That gives us time to photograph your baby, include parents and siblings, and move between a few spaces without rushing.

We can adjust as needed based on how your baby is doing and what works best for your family.

You don't need to have every detail planned ahead of time. We'll take things one step at a time.

8. How Can You Prepare Without Overthinking It?

A little preparation can help, but you don't need to do much.

Here are a few easy things you can do before I arrive:

  • Choose simple, comfortable outfits for everyone who will be photographed.

  • Open curtains or blinds in the rooms with the best natural light.

  • Clear a small area in the bedroom, nursery, or living room if you'd like.

  • Keep diapers, wipes, and feeding supplies nearby.

  • Give yourself permission to let the rest go.

Most importantly, don't stress about having a perfect day. Newborn life is unpredictable, and your session is designed with that in mind.
