When Is the Best Time to Take Newborn Photos? (Plymouth, Minnesota Newborn Photographer)

One of the most common questions I get from new parents is when to schedule newborn photos. With so much going on during those first few weeks, it can feel overwhelming to even think about planning a session.
The good news is that the process is simpler and more flexible than you might expect.
As a newborn photographer in Plymouth, Minnesota, I’ll walk you through what timing works best and how we plan your session in a way that feels easy and low stress.
The Ideal Time for Newborn Photos
The most common recommendation for newborn photos is within the first 2 to 3 weeks after your baby is born.
During this stage:
Babies tend to be sleepier
They are more easily soothed
They naturally curl into those cozy newborn poses
This is typically when you get those soft, snuggly, sleepy images that many parents love.

But You Don’t Have to Rush
While that early window is ideal, it is not a strict rule.
Every baby and every family is different. If you need more time to recover, adjust, or simply settle into life with your newborn, that is completely okay.
I photograph newborns who are a little older all the time, and those sessions are just as meaningful. You may get more eye contact, stretches, and interaction, which can be just as special.
The most important thing is that you feel ready.
When to Book Your Newborn Session
The best time to book your newborn session is actually before your baby arrives.
Most families reach out during their second or third trimester to reserve a spot on my calendar. This ensures I have availability around your due date.
Once your baby is born, you simply reach out and we choose the exact date based on how you are feeling and how everything is going.
This way:
You are not scrambling after delivery
You still have flexibility
Your session is already planned and stress-free
How Scheduling Works
Because babies rarely arrive exactly on their due date, I keep scheduling flexible.
We reserve your session ahead of time, and then once your baby is here, we finalize the date together. This allows us to aim for that 2 to 3 week window while still adjusting if needed.
If your baby arrives early or late, we simply shift things accordingly.
What If My Baby Is Older?
If your baby is already a few weeks or even a couple of months old, it is absolutely not too late.
Older newborn sessions often include:
More awake moments
Eye contact
Stretching and movement
Interaction with parents and siblings
These sessions feel a little different but are just as beautiful and meaningful.

In-Home Newborn Sessions Make It Easier
All of my newborn sessions take place in your home, which makes the entire experience much more relaxed.
You do not have to pack up your baby, rush out the door, or worry about forgetting anything. Everything you need is already right there.
We use natural light and simple spaces in your home to create soft, timeless images that focus on your connection as a family.
