What to Wear for Family Photos (Without the Stress)
One of the questions I hear most often is: “What should we wear for our family photos?” And I get it, planning outfits can feel like the hardest part of getting in front of the camera. But here’s the good news: it doesn’t have to be complicated.
The truth is, the best outfits are the ones that make you feel good. If you’re comfortable and confident, that energy shows up in your photos. And when kids can run, play, and snuggle without tugging at their clothes, it makes the whole experience smoother for everyone.
Here are my favorite tips for choosing outfits you’ll love:
1. Comfort First
When you feel good, it shows. Go for pieces you already know and love — the cozy sweater you always grab, the flowy dress that makes you feel confident, or the jeans that actually fit right. If the kids can move, jump, and play in their outfits, we’ll capture more natural smiles.
2. Coordinate, Don’t Match
Instead of everyone wearing the same thing, think about a color palette. Warm neutrals, earth tones, and even muted soft blues all photograph beautifully together. Let each person’s outfit complement the others while still feeling unique.
3. Neutrals Are Timeless
I personally love neutrals — creams, tans, grays, denim, soft greens and blues. They keep the focus on your family’s connection instead of the clothes, and they’ll never feel dated when you look back years from now.
4. Play With Layers & Textures
This is the most overlooked part, in my opinion. Cardigans, vests, a flowy skirt, or even linen shirts can add dimension without being distracting. Mixing different fabrics, like cotton, knit, or denim, keeps things interesting in photos.

5. Avoid the Distractions
Logos, neon colors, or super busy patterns tend to pull the eye away from what really matters (you!). Simple, classic choices always photograph best.
6. Let Your Personality Shine
At the end of the day, these photos are about you. If your child loves their sparkly shoes, let them wear them. If you feel amazing in a certain dress, that joy will shine through. The goal isn’t perfection, it’s capturing your family as you are, together.
Final Thoughts
Outfits are important, but they’re not everything. What truly makes your photos beautiful is the love, laughter, and connection you share. If you ever feel stuck, I’m always happy to share inspiration or help you piece together looks that fit your family’s style.
So wear what makes you feel good, show up as yourselves, and let’s create something timeless together.
