If you're looking for beautiful outdoor family photos in Plymouth, Minnesota, you do not have to travel far. We have some truly stunning natural backdrops right here, from lake views to wooded paths to soft sandy beaches.

When choosing a location, I always consider three things:

  • How your kids typically do outdoors

  • The season

  • The overall vibe you are hoping for

Here are some of my favorite Plymouth-area locations for family sessions.

French Regional Park Beach Area and Bridges

The beach area at French Regional Park is one of my favorite spots for families who want a relaxed, playful feel. The sandy shoreline gives kids space to move naturally, and the nearby bridges and paths add beautiful texture and variety to your gallery.

What I love about this area:

  • Open space for little ones who do not love standing still

  • Neutral tones that pair well with almost any outfit palette

  • A mix of water, wood, and greenery for visual interest

The bridges leading down to the beach are especially beautiful. They create depth in photos and give us multiple backdrops within a short walking distance.

French Regional Park does require a photography permit. I always make sure permits are secured and park rules are followed. It protects the space so families and photographers can continue using it for years to come.

Medicine Lake

Medicine Lake is such a beautiful Plymouth landmark. The shoreline and water views create a timeless, natural backdrop, especially in the warmer months.

While I do not photograph here as often, it is a lovely option for families who:

  • Love the water

  • Want a more open, breezy look

  • Prefer a classic Minnesota lake feel

As with many public spaces, permits may be required depending on the area and session type. It is always worth checking and respecting local guidelines.

Millennium Garden

Millennium Garden offers a more structured and polished look. When flowers are in bloom, it feels vibrant and elegant. It is perfect if you love color and a slightly more formal setting.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • It is very popular, especially on weekends

  • Event bookings often limit availability

  • Photography permits are typically required

Because of its popularity, I usually recommend Millennium Garden for weekday sessions when possible.

Why Permits Matter

Most of the beautiful parks and public spaces in Plymouth require photography permits. I know it can feel like just another detail, but it truly matters.

Permits:

  • Protect public spaces from overuse

  • Support park maintenance

  • Ensure photography continues to be allowed

  • Keep things professional and respectful

Following the rules helps preserve these locations so they do not get restricted in the future. It is one of those behind-the-scenes details that families may not always see, but it is part of doing things the right way.

Not Sure Which Location Is Right

Every family is different.

Some kids thrive near water where they can explore. Some do better in contained spaces. Some families want playful and candid. Others want more polished and classic.

When you book a family session with me, I help guide you through choosing a location based on:

  • The season

  • Your kids’ ages and personalities

  • Your outfit choices

  • The overall feel you want

If you are searching for a Plymouth, Minnesota family photographer, I would love to help you choose the perfect setting and create photos that feel like your family.
